Man arrested for rape of minor girl in Odisha

The accused, identified as a person of the same village, was arrested yesterday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl's mother on Saturday.

JAJPUR: A 26-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl at a village in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said today.

The incident happened at Nanpur village in Balichandrapur area on Friday night when the 13-year-old girl was returning home after witnessing a marriage procession, Inspector In-Charge of Balichandrapur police station Rakesh Chandra Tripathy said.

The accused, identified as a person of the same village, was arrested yesterday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the girl's mother on Saturday.

Finding the girl alone, he had dragged her to a secluded place on the Birupa river bank and raped her.

After committing the crime, he threatened the girl of dire consequences if she reported the matter to anyone and fled the scene, the IIC said.

The girl returned home that night and narrated the incident to her mother, who approached the police on Saturday.

On the basis of the complaint, police registered a case and arrested the accused from his residence yesterday. The police conducted medical examination of both the girl and the accused.

The accused has been booked under relevant provisions of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act, the police said.
