Johannesburg - If you’re a fan of the eclectic, then Mx Blouse’s work will be lovely for you. The arrangements are not of the radio mould; they have something overtly groovy about them – one could maybe even call this New Age kwaito.

It’s a shame that genre has just been swallowed up by gqom – any new work of the old inclination will now sound fresh. Mx Blouse has that, with an interesting aesthetic, and their voice isn’t bad either.

Single Is’phukuphuku is the perfect example of that good, old-fashioned kwaito and I could get down to this track if only just for a little while.There’s something interesting about Mx. Their lyrics are simple but piercing. They call out President Cyril Ramaphosa for forgetting Marikana, then drop a scheme about a man looking to bless a girl but she isn’t interested as she has her own cash.

Only Words are Perfect is a track I enjoyed too, with Mx playing around by rapidly switching the tempos and melodies.I think it’s time to give Sister Nancy’s Bam Bam a rest as a sample now. The list of artists who’ve superimposed it on to their tracks grows every day.It happens again on this, but at least Mx rattles off a few bars. They come across as rap, a bit repetitive, but at least they’re saying something more than how fly their jewels look in the strip club.

It’s hard to dissect an artist with an array of styles going on.

Can’t Walk The Streets reminds me of the new age of rap. This is in essence trap meeting consciousness – not to say trap isn’t conscious sometimes – but the rhyme style is similar to the old delivery of OG rappers, such as Hymphatic Thabs or Ben Sharpa, who had militant minds to say the least.

Love Was a Lie is like the opposite of this. It’s a cute sound – think of the work of people such as singer Ryki and Moonchild Sanelly. I would prefer to have a fully packaged album soon as his Soundcloud is not quite convincing enough. Mx is one to watch though.
