Assam sprinter in the limelight
Assam’s track and field sensation Hima Das stole the limelight at the 58th Senior National Inter-State Athletic Championships in Guwahati recently where she emerged as the best athlete. The sprinter from central Assam has now set her eyes on the ensuing Asian Games. Sports icon PT Usha, who witnessed the championship, said she was confident Hima would win a medal at the Asian Games. Hima said she was working hard to improve her performance. Felicitating the budding athlete, Governor Jagdish Mukhi promised all possible support to her so that she could scale greater heights in life.
Promoting Nepal tourism
In an attempt to promote Nepal’s tourism industry, the Nepalese embassy in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry organised a seminar in Guwahati. Stating that Nepal and Assam are blessed with similar flora and fauna, Bharat Kumar Regmi, Charge d’Affaires, Embassy of Nepal, said there were ample scopes for investment and cooperation for Indian companies in Nepal’s tourism sector. In this regard, he said, Nepal would consider a direct flight between Guwahati and Kathmandu. The envoy insisted on cultural exchange programmes so that the people in Nepal and Assam could come closer to one another.
NRL’s Swachh initiative
Lending its helping hand to keep Guwahati clean, the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) donated waste-handling equipment and vehicles worth C2.2 crore to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC). The keys of the equipment and vehicles were handed over to Mayor Mrigen Sarania and GMC Commissioner Monalisa Goswami at a programme. The equipment included a truck mounted garbage compactor, GPS-fitted rickshaw, tricycle carts, mini skid steer loader and four-wheeler auto tipper. The NRL has extended similar support to municipal corporations and town committees in Nagaon, Tezpur, Dibrugarh, Dergaon, Golaghat, Bokakhat and Koliabor.
Fake account in DGP’s name
Days after a fake Facebook account of Guwahati Police Commissioner Hiren Nath surfaced, Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia is the latest high-profile victim on social media. Saikia confirmed having a personal Facebook account but he said he had no idea about the second account until he was informed about it by his colleagues. Given that the fake account does not have any friend, the police believed it was newly created. The cyber cell of the police is conducting a probe.
