Wimbledon: Divij Sharan advances in men’s doubles

India’s Divij Sharan and his Kiwi team-mate Artem Sitak have entered the Men’s Doubles pre-quarterfinals of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, the third Grand Slam of the season, in London. The pair showed remarkable resilience and came back from two sets down to beat the Chilean-Argentine team of Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos in a five-setter, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-4. Divij is the only Indian left in the tournament. Rohan Bopanna, Purav Raja, Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, with their team-mates, and the duo of Sriram Balaji and Vishnu Vardhan have already bowed out.
In Mixed Doubles, Divij and his Polish team-mate Alicja Rosolska made a first round exit last night. Divij was the only Indian in the category.
In the Singles, world number one Simona Halep crashed out yesterday after she was stunned by Taiwan’s Su-Wei Hsieh, 6-3, 4-6, 5-7. Second seed Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro were among those who progressed to the pre-quarterfinals.
