HYDERABAD: After a lull of several weeks, almost entire Telangana experienced monsoon showers on Saturday. Showers throughout the day brought down the temperatures across the State to 22-26 degree Celsius by evening.

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall was likely to occur over the next two days in most of the districts of Telangana. Light to moderate showers will continue to lash most parts of the State in the next four days, the IMD report said.

Although the southwest monsoon arrived in Telangana early this year on June 8, as compared to last few years, the rains have not been bountiful yet. Till only a day ago five districts in the state, including Hyderabad, had recorded deficient rainfall as per the data by Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS).

However, despite Saturday’s widespread rains over Telangana, Hyderabad remained rain-deficient as the city experienced 21 per cent below normal rainfall. As per the IMD definition, if rainfall is recorded 20-59 per cent below normal, it falls in the ‘deficient rainfall’ category. Going by what the officials say, it is important that the rains continue to occur regularly if the State does not want to witness any water or agricultural crisis, as July and August are the most important months in a year when maximum rainfall is recorded.
