KOCHI: The people of Thevara forced to put up with a seemingly endless line of vehicles choking the region’s roads now have a glimmer of hope as the district administration is all set to unveil measures which will ease the traffic snarls there.
To find a way out, District Collector K Mohammed Y Safeerulla on Saturday convened a meeting which was attended by K V Thomas MP, Hibi Eden MLA and counsellors from Thevara.
The major discussions at the high-powered talks centred on effective steps to decongest traffic along the Pandit Karuppan Road and it was decided to conduct a study on traffic congestions in the area which will be carried out by a government agency. The study will focus on road construction, land acquisition and rehabilitation. Based on this, a town planning project will be unveiled.
Also, suggestions for resolving the issue in the short-term will get precedence. A special team comprising the Kanayanoor Taluk tahsildar and surveyors will be formed to identify roadside encroachments at Thevara. The steps to identify and evacuate illegal encroachments in Thevara will be initiated this month.
C K Peter, Corporation councillor and Pandit Karuppan Road Development Council convener, submitted a proposal for increasing the height and width of Railway overbridge(ROB) pillars at Thevara.
Removing electric posts no longer used by the KSEB for drawing transmission lines, relocating the power poles hampering free movement of traffic, ban on roadside parking, clamping down on billboards placed by the roadside, traffic regulations during the morning and evening school hours and providing a dedicated parking place at the Railway- owned land at Thevara are among Peter’s other suggestions.
The counsellors from the region also called for steps to evict street vendors who have occupied both sides of the Thevara Road. After weighing the proposals, the Collector decided to implement it within one month.
