The northern paradisiacal islands of Cuba and other regions will be developed into eco friendly resorts as a part of Cuba’s ambitious plan to develop sustainable tourism.
Santa Maria, Las Brujas and Ensenachos, the keys off the coast of north-central Villa Clara province are currently being developed.
The Caribbean has prioritized the preservation of the islands which are connected to each other and the mainland via a48-km causeway that has more than 40 bridges.
There are five waste treatment plants set up in the island that processes between 20,000 and 30,000 cubic meters every month from the local hotels. Further the sewage is ulitlised for gardening.
There will also desalination plant in the keys to purify water through reverse osmosis at a rate of 50 litres per second.
Frank Oltusky, vice president of Cuba’s tourist group Gaviota, said next year they will be installing another one with the same capacity that will purify 100 litres of water per second.
The government has invested in different types of processing and recycling plants to manage hotel waste.
The area is a part of the Bay of Buena Vista ecosystem and was declared by UNESCO as a “Biosphere Reserve.
In 2017 the nation has welcomed 4.7 million tourists and intends to s et new record by receiving 5 million visitors this year. Cuba’s second source of revenue is Tourism.
