AHMEDABAD: In a major sigh of relief for several female school teachers, they will no more be compelled to wear a
sari to school. A recently issued notification by the state education department has indicated that women teachers may choose a formal attire that suits them – be it a sari or a salwar kameez – should not be harassed for their attire while at work. The issue was debated widely, of late, after cases of women teachers being harassed for not wearing a saree to work and at other places while on duty, came to the fore.
Sources said that in the past, several District Education Offices (DEOs) had passed order, making sari a compulsory attire at school and other places of official duty. In fact, women were being harassed by the elected officials on duty, for not putting on a sari, threatening that their increments will be halted. Sources also said that several women faced serious discomfort in wearing a sari as they had to travel longer distances.
The issue was also represented before the deputy chief minister, Nitin Patel, by the Gujarat Government Teaching and Non-Teaching Staffers’ Committee.
