Sam Ricketts is looking forward to the ‘next steps in Wrexham’s progression’ as they take on Airbus UK on Saturday.

The match, which has been brought forward to a 12pm kick off at the Airfield, is Wrexham’s second of pre-season following a 2-1 win last Friday night at Stansty Park against Lex XI.

Victory over the Welsh National League Premier Division side was secured thanks to goals from Chris Holroyd and trialist Michael Elstone,t he encounter reduced to 30-minutes each half with both sides easing back into pre-season fitness.

And Ricketts says the clash at Huws Gray Alliance outfit Airbus is the ideal next step for the Dragons.

“It is a bit of everything, a little bit of fitness and a again another few steps in our progression and how we want to play, with and without the ball,” said Ricketts.

“It will be the first time being on an artificial pitch this season, obviously there are a few teams in the league who play on 4G so it will be good to get the players on it.

“You don’t want to be on it too long because it is a change of surface which is not ideal but it is another really good step in our progression to where we want to be.”

Friday’s clash at Lex saw Ricketts use all 11 senior players at his disposal, left-back James Jennings was unavailable - in the first half.

The manager then sent out the youth team with three trialists for the second half.

Ricketts, who will have Jennings back in the fold, as well as new signings Mike Fondop-Talom and Luke Summerfield, is looking to give the whole squad a run out at the Airfields.

He added: “We have a squad here so all the players will be involved all the time. We don’t have a 24-man squad where five or six are being left out, that is not how we work, we work with a squad so everyone is involved all the time.

“And it will be the case during the season that you might have played really well but don’t play the next game because there is someone else chomping at the bit and it means you are fresher for the next game. That is how the game is going nowadays.

“All the pre-season games are a step up in quality, a step up in what we are trying to do both with and without the ball and gradually building up to August 4th.”
