Whitlams frontman added to Dark Dream ownership
Australian rocker Tim Freedman has been added to the ownership of Queensland Derby winner Dark Dream, but the staying star is still yet to be transferred to a new trainer after leaving Kerry Parker's stables.
Managing owner Mary Jane Basson has invited Freedman, the lead singer from the Whitlams, to race Dark Dream in conjunction with her as the gelding readies for a potential spring cups campaign.
"At this stage I've transferred a share in Dark Dream to my most trusted and loyal friend of over 30 years in Tim Freedman," Basson said. "Tim and I are very excited about Dark Dream's future. We're very excited to be racing him together and about his prospects. He's a very special horse."
Freedman, who has known hobby breeder Basson for more than three decades, was jubilant as he watched Dark Dream win the Queensland Derby while on tour in north Queensland last month. And now he will get to share in the future of the horse.
Dark Dream was the subject of multi-million dollar offers from Asian interests prior to his group 1 win, which was the first for Kembla Grange trainer Parker in more than two decades of training. But the horse has since left Parker's stable, along with the rest of the Basson-owned horses.
The rest of Basson's string have found a new home with Newcastle trainer Paul Perry, who initially trained Dark Dream's mother Buchanan Girl when she was a two-year-old. But a decision on who will take charge of Dark Dream is still yet to be made.
"I can certainly say in relation to my other horses, Paul Perry is now training for me," Basson said.
Basson will also use Allan Kehoe, who broke in Dark Dream, to train future progeny from Buchanan Girl, which Perry had a high opinion of as a juvenile.
