BENGALURU: A Bengaluru-based animation company was cheated of Rs 7 lakh by a businessman from Hyderabad who took the money as a deposit towards a Rs 2-crore Dutch order that he promised to get the firm.
Varthur police on Tuesday registered a cheating case based on the complaint filed by R Ranjith, founder of Satcha Entertainment, an animation firm.

Ranjith told police that he came to contact with Anurag Botek, who runs a firm in Hyderabad last year. Botek promised Ranjith that he would get a Rs 2 crore project from a Netherlands firm. The duo arrived at an agreement on August 30, 2017 about the deal. “I paid Rs 7.2 lakh as deposit to Botek’s firm Infocom Pvt Ltd. He gave us a project and we finished around 10% of the work worth Rs 13 lakh,” he said in the complaint.

Ranjit suspected something amiss and got in touch with the Netherlands company and was told it had not given any project to Botek or his Hyderabad firm. “Botek offered a fake project to collect deposit money from us,” Ranjth alleged.

Police said Ranjith and his team came to know that Botek was in Bengaluru on June 19 for some work and they met him at Kundalahalli Gate. Botek refused to return their money and allegedly threatened that he would kill Ranjith if he asked for it.

Varthur police said they have registered a cheating and criminal intimidation case under sections 420 and 506 of IPC. “We’ve asked Ranjith to provide the documents and will summon the suspect for inquiry,” a police officer said.

According to Ranjith, Botek had cheated him over Rs 20 lakh including the animation work done for him.
