Cyclonic circulation: Rains in S Odisha from today

| | BHUBANESWAR | in Bhubaneswar

Shifting of the cyclonic circulation towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining northwest-west central Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger moderate rainfall with heavy fall at a few places in Odisha’s southern districts from Friday, according to the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) under the SOA University here on Thursday.

The rains may continue till July 9, after which the cyclonic circulation could shift again northwards towards north Odisha and the  adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal coast causing increased rainfall in north Odisha from July 10, the CEC said.

The normal rainfall in Odisha in June and July being 213.8 mm and 336.8 mm, respectively, precipitation up to July 12 might be nearly equal to daily climatological normal rainfall, but it might not compensate the deficit of minus 26 per cent till July 4.

It was because most part of the cyclonic circulation could be over land and the westerly component was likely to be stronger than the easterly component, CEC Director Dr SC Sahu, said.

Dr. Sahu said there is also a high probability of formation of a low pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast on July 13, which can support very heavy rainfall in north Odisha up to July 15, compensating for the deficit in rainfall till now.
