Trade union (TU) unity, joint solidarity action at national and regional levels is the only answer for the adverse impact of globalisation and market economy, said  former MP and national vice president of INTUC Dr Ram Chandra Khuntia while participating in the discussion in a workshop held at Beijing from June 26 to 28 organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and ACFTU, China.

Dr Khuntia said that the trade union movement is weak in Asia Pacific because of multiplicity of unity, ideological differences and vast number of unorganised workers.

“In India we have already Joint Co-ordination Committees of all trade unions for joint action programme.

We must chalk out a strategic plan to develop regional and national co-operation among the trade unions,” he said.

Among others Joseph John from HMS, K Pandia from BMS, Padmashree Rane from Sri Lanka, Swareri Yari as Director from IndoAsia, Sunday, from Cambodia, Achary from Nepal, ILO Action Director Hilde Sanjes, ILO Asia Director Acrd Cadero were present.

The workshop agreed to have two years plan to develop and strengthen the co-operation and joint action on health and safety issue, communication, skill development and skill recognition, migration and organising unorganised workers in the region.
