A 90- year-old man successfully underwent the high- risk open heart surgery at the Birla Hospital, Gwalior. This is reportedly the first case in the city wherein an open heart surgery has been successfully performed on a patient of this advanced age.

When Jayadayal Singh, a resident of Park Hotel was admitted in the hospital, two of his arteries had 99% and 90% blockage in them. The doctors at the hospital counseled the patient and his family that despite the advanced age open-heart surgery was the only option to save the patient even while informing them of the risks associated with it.

As the patient and his relatives were keen on a definite treatment for the heart condition due to the ineffectiveness of the medications they consented and the operation was conducted by two specialists from Delhi on June 16. The five and a half hour successful operation was performed by Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Ashok Vayshya with the assistance of Dr Akash Modi and Dr Kavi Bhargav. The patient was discharged yesterday after the post operation treatment.

Talking to the media persons, Dr Ashok said that significant health risks are associated with such operations as the chances of survival are too low. He added that he and his team were happy that they could successfully perform the risky operation and improve the quality of life of the patient.

Patient’s son PP Singh said that the family had lost all hope due to the severity of the blockages but that his father is healthy and out of risk now.
