Bihar: Police saves killer from clutches of lynch mob in Nalanda

PATNA: At least five police personnel were injured when they attempted to save a person Rajnikant Kumar alias Sheru from clutches of a violent lynch mob after he was caught while trying to flee allegedly after killing another person at Mahalpar locality under Bihar police station area in Nalanda on Thursday.
During the police attempt to save him from getting lynched, mob became violent and pelted stone on security personnel.

Sadar SDPO Nishit Priya said that at least three bikes belonging to common people were torched by the violent mob. She said policemen somehow managed to save the suspected killer even after he was thrown from heights of a private building.

She said that Bihar police station SHO Keshav Kumar Mazumdar along with two sub-inspectors Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Ezaz were among the injured policemen. Priya said raids were on to arrest those involved in violence.

Police sources said that Rajnikant along with few other persons reached Mahalpar locality at around 9am and shot one Diwakar Kumar in head from a very close range killing his at spot. They said the assailants were relatives of Diwakar.

“Rajnikant was among the killers and while trying to flee, he got surrounded by mob. He entered inside a private building where he locked himself,” sources said. They said Diwakar used to sell cold drinks and recharge coupons at Mahalpar and was shot dead while he was opening his shop.

Sources said that Rajnikant and other had reached his shop on Thursday evening and went without paying for the cold drinks they drank.

“Within couple of hours, they returned and again demanded cold drinks to which Diwakar denied. He was threatened after the incident and in the morning he was shot dead,” source said. They said that in preliminary investigation, it has surfaced that Diwakar was having land dispute with cousins and the murder as perhaps fallout of the dispute.

“The issue of dispute over payment of cold drinks was just perhaps to misguide police,” sources said.
