Gujarati compulsory from August in schools

AHMEDABAD: State government has decided to make Gujarati compulsory in all the schools in Gujarat from August, irrespective of the boards namely CBSE, ICSE, IB, CISEC and IGCSE they may be affiliated to.

In order to familiarize students with Gujarati, the state government has decided to make the language a mandatory subject in classes from I to VIII. The decision to make Gujarati compulsory would come into effect from the academic year starting June. Those schools where the new academic year has already started, the decision will be implemented from the second term of the year.

Gujarat State School Textbook Board has readied the textbooks for class I and class II and expects the same to be available in the market by this month-end. The state government has stated that since the books are available, the same can be taught from August in Gujarat. tnn
