NAGPUR: Maharashtra state legislative assembly in Nagpur was adjourned for the day without any business, due to power failure in Vidhan Bhavan.

The problem was blamed on overnight rains that lashed Nagpur. Water entered into the transformer room located underground inside Vidhan Bhavan premises, leading to a power failure.

On Friday, the lower house assembled at 10 am, however it was adjourned for an hour because of no electricity. An hour later when the house assembled again, speaker Haribhau Bagade amid ruckus by angry opposition members adjourned the House for the day.

While opposition members wanted to speak on the power failure issue, the speaker decided it would not be safe to continue the house due to the water logging in the transformer room and adjourned the house for the day.

"The speaker decided to adjourned the house for the day to avoid untoward incident as a safety precaution. This was decided after consultation with all party leaders," said Vinod Tawde, minister of higher education.

The opposition however slammed the government. "This shows how the government functions. The government was insistent that the monsoon session should be conducted in Nagpur but they haven't made even basic arrangements," said Dhananjay Munde, opposition leader in the legislative council.
