Like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh will soon ban the use of plastic in the state. This was revealed by UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath today.

"We have decided to come out with a notification to ban the use of plastic in the state," the chief minister was quoted as saying by ANI.

"I urge the people to stop using plastic cups, glass, polythene after July 15," he added further.

Maharashtra had banned the use of plastic from June 23. However it later softened the ban after intense lobbying from industrialists, allowing e-commerce companies to use plastic packaging for three more months.

The latest announcemnt came as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is pushing a plan to completely end the use of single-use plastic in India by 2022.

Plastic packaging accounts for nearly half of all plastic waste globally, and much of it is thrown away within just a few minutes of its first use, according to the United Nations.
