Injured woman’s condition critical: docs

Mumbai: The Western Railway (WR) administration on Wednesday began compensating victims of Tuesday's bridge collapse in Andheri. Five people were injured when the Road Overbridge at Andheri collapsed on Tuesday morning. Railways Minister Piyush Goyal had announced a compensation of ₹1 lakh each to the victims.

Manoj Mehta, who was injured by falling debris while waiting on platform no. 8, underwent spinal surgery on Tuesday at Nanavati Hospital. However, his lower body is non-responsive. Doctors said that they will need 48 more hours to study his condition. “WR officials visited us in hospital on Tuesday with ₹1 lakh. They have also promised to take care of the treatment costs,” his brother Rajesh said.

Asmita Katkar, the worst affected, is said to be critical. Her brother-in-law Ankush said, “She has suffered many injuries and has brain haemorrage. Her situation is critical. She is on ventilator support in the ICU. We were given ₹1 lakh by WR officials on Wednesday.”

Girdhari Singh, a security guard, sustained fractures to both hands and spinal injury. “Doctors said he will be operated upon after 48 hours for a spinal injury, and will require bed rest for a month,” his brother Narendra Singh said.

Dwarkaprasad Sharma, also a security guard, fractured a leg. He was transferred to the orthopaedic department on Wednesday. Both Mr. Singh and Mr. Sharma are yet to receive compensation, their family members said. Dr. Parmeshwar Talabadi, attached to the surgical ward, said Mr Sharma’s leg was operated upon.

The fifth victim, Haresh Koli, had injured his left hand. He was discharged on Wednesday morning.
