The temporary scaffolding will be taken down and the repair work will take place to strengthen the bridge deck. Protective panels will be fitted to prevent further wear.

Passengers requiring access to platform one will be diverted via the pedestrian footbridge which is used to access the beach. The work is scheduled to finish by Friday 27 July.

c2c services will not be affected by the work.

Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail’s route managing director for Anglia, said: “It’s important that we renew footbridges like these to maintain access around the station. These improvements are a vital aspect of our strategy to provide a safe, reliable and efficient railway as part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.”

c2c Head of Stations, Julie Davis, said: “We will have extra staff at Chalkwell station over the next few weeks to help customers while Network Rail undertake this essential work to upgrade the footbridge.”
