GURUGRAM: GMDA will convert the four-lane Shankar Road into six lanes. The road, which connects NH-8 with Old Delhi Gurugram Road at Dundahera, has seen an increase in vehicular traffic over the years.

According to officials, the feasibility to convert the road into six lanes has been ascertained but it would take nearly a year to do the work. “Shankar Road is one of the choke points in the city and the traffic load here is increasing, every day. So, we have decided to widen this road all the way from Shankar Chowk till its end at Dundahera. While we have found out that the project is feasible, it will take nearly a year to complete this work. There is enough space on both sides of the road to widen it,” said V Umashankar, CEO, GMDA.

Last year, GMDA installed jersey barriers on the two-kilometre Shankar Road to streamline the ever-increasing traffic. However, the barriers have gone missing at several places and the ones that are still there stand in a hapha-zard manner, increasing chance of accidents.

The need to widen the road is also felt as the new DLF Cyber Park building at Shankar Chowk will be operational soon, increasing the traffic flow on this road. Two prominent hotels are also on this road, apart from a handful of MNCs.

Commuters complain of getting stuck on the stretch, every day. “Not only has the traffic volume grown exponentially, there is a liquor vend on this road and vehicles are often parked outside it, leading to congestion. No traffic cop is deployed here and there is a huge tree in the middle of the road,” said Kamal Sharma, who works in an IT firm in the area.
