The public is invited to celebrate the launch of the Lighting the Way walking trail, meet some of the women featured in the project, and be among the first to explore the project stories and walking trail during July 12 AHA! Night with a reception and guest speaker at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

The event is part of a large multi-pronged project, "Lighting the Way – Historic Women of the South Coast," which tells the stories of commitment, determination and perseverance of women from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

“Women’s contributions have often been heard as whispers in history,” said Christina Bascom, the project’s designer. Spurred on by tales of a Petticoat Society, a group of women from throughout the community are bringing these stories to life on the South Coast. “We are unearthing remarkable stories of women’s personal callings that required grit, tenacity and enduring commitment to their families, community and country. These stories will inspire, motivate and inform generations to come.”

The launch party will be July 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a reception at 6 p.m. and guest speakers at 6:30 p.m.

Guests will be among the first to explore the project stories and walking trail, meet some of the women featured in the project, enjoy family activities, refreshments, and give-aways
Guided tours will leave from the New Bedford Whaling Museum every 30 minutes.

Plans for the project include the Lighting the Way walking trail, map, mobile app and website debuting this summer with 2019-2020 features to include school curriculum and programs marking the centennial of the 19th Amendment and women's right to vote.
