Charge sheet submitted seventeen days after FIR; Garudabasa village rape case

BARIPADA: Mayurbhanj Police on Wednesday submitted a charge sheet in a case related to rape and murder of a minor girl, 17 days after it was filed in the Betnoti police station.  

The incident had taken place in Garudabasa village within Betnoti police limits and the police case was registered on June 15. The accused Jaminikanta Mohanta(24) of the same village was arrested a day after the incident.

The victim’s brother had registered a police complaint. SP Awinash Kumar said in the minimum possible time of 17 days from registration of the case, the charge sheet was submitted for a speedy trial of the case. “Our entire team, worked round-the-clock and drafted a cohesive charge sheet linking all the evidence with the crime to have a sound case against the accused,” he said. Following the incidence, the district police had formed a team for collection of evidence.

The SP said a scientific team was used to collect evidence from the crime spot and cops along with DFSL team meticulously searched the scene of crime to find out crucial evidence material, which proved the involvement of the accused in the crime.  Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced `5 lakh ex gratia to kin of the girl of Garudabasa village. This is the first time the district police took such a short time to speed up the inquiry and submitted charge sheet.

The SP added that another case of sexual offence was registered against Jaminikanta, which had taken place on August 18, 2015.
