A businessman was duped of over ₹24 lakh by men who told him that he had won ₹1.07 crore in an online lottery.

He got an email in May this year asking him to call a number to claim his prize. Nagaraju M., resident of Basaveshwara Nagar in Hosakote, called up the number. He spoke to Sanjay Kumar and Sonia Sharma, who claimed to be representatives of Goodluck Company, which was facilitating the lottery prize .

The duo convinced Nagaraju to transfer ₹24,27,200 to over 12 bank accounts citing processing fee, income tax dues and clearance fee, before asking him to wait till the money is transferred to his account. After waiting till July, Nagaraju called the number again and found that the phone was switched off.

The Hosakote police registered an FIR under various sections of the IT Act.

Homemaker duped

A homemaker in Kadugodi was duped of ₹59,000 in June this year after being who offered a work-from-home job with a salary of ₹40,000 per month.

The victim, Saraswathi, is the wife of Swaroop Kumar, employee of a private firm. She saw an advertisement in a newspaper of part-time jobs with work-from-home option. On calling the number, a man identifying himself as Sunil Sharma asked her to pay ₹1,150 as registration fee. Once the payment was made, he called Saraswathi told her to pay ₹59,200 for insurance and a laptop, which would be issued in her name. Saraswathi paid the money in June.

When Saraswathi called Sunil Sharma seeking an update, he stated that she would be intimated next month.

Suspecting something fishy, she asked him to refund the money. Sunil advised her to pay ₹40,000 so that he could issue her a cheque of ₹1 lakh.

After repeated requests, she and her husband approached the Kadugodi police on Monday, and filed a complaint. The police have registered an FIR and are trying to track down Sunil.
