Making its intention clear to contest the ensuing elections of cooperative societies, the state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has constituted a five- member committee for these elections. The members of the committee are state general secretaries Naresh Bansal, Gajraj Singh Bisht and Khajan Das, chairman Uttarakhand Cooperative Bank Dan Singh Rawat and chairman Uttarakhand Cooperative Federation Ghanshyam Nautiyal.

The party general secretary Naresh Bansal said that the five- member committee was picked up by the state party president Ajay Bhatt. He said that the party would contest these elections with all its might and emerge victorious. Bansal said that the committee would prepare strategy for the election and would also act a monitoring agency.

Starting from July, the schedule of the cooperative elections has been  staggered over a period of more than six months. The cooperative set up in the state is three- tiered with Primary Agriculture Credit Societies ( PACS) constituting the first level. There are more than 750 PACS in the state. The ten district cooperative banks form the second level of the structural set- up while there are four apex cooperative bodies in the state. To have more control on these societies, the BJP- led state government had disqualified many societies recently.
