THANE: In a move that will provide better livelihood to the ragpickers here as well as help in making good use of recyclable materials, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) plans to rope in ragpickers for collecting and segregating recyclable materials from the garbage generated in the slum area of the city.

Right now garbage is collected mostly from residential buildings as well as housing societies. Most of the slum dwellers are throwing waste in nearby nullah or open space.

TMC official said that they were planning to rope in non-governmental organizations to identify ragpickers in the city. The project will cost approximately Rs 4 crore.

TMC has selected 127 slum pockets from Vartak Nagar, Wagle estate, Lokmanya-Sawarkar Nagar, Uthalsar, Naupada, Kalwa, Mumbra, Majiwada, Manpada and Kopri municiple wards. One NGO can apply for five slum pockets.

One worker will be deputed to collect waste from 300 slum homes. Uploading of photos of garbage collected from these slums on TMC App is mandatory. For effective implementation of this scheme, TMC is also planning to build one App connected to GPS.

Every worker will download this App. Then he or she will upload the picture of home from where he has collected the garbage, on a daily basis.
