Two pedestrians are fighting for their lives after separate collisions which occurred within an hour of each other on Thursday morning.

Paramedics were called to Grange Road at Wingrove Street in Alphington, in Melbourne's north-east, at 6.25am.

A male pedestrian, aged in his 70s, sustained injuries to his abdominal region and was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital,  an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said.

The driver was assessed at the scene for shock but had no obvious injuries.

About 45 minutes later, a second pedestrian was hit by a car in Cheltenham, in Melbourne's south-east.

Paramedics were called to Kingston Road and Warragul Road in Cheltenham just after 7am.

It's believed the male pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when he was struck by a car travelling west. Two men in the vehicle were uninjured, and are assisting police.

The pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was taken by road ambulance to The Alfred hospital in a critical condition with upper body and head injuries.

Kingston Road was reduced to one lane in each direction at Warrigal Road but the road has now re-opened.
