AHMEDABAD: One half of the engineering colleges in the state have been unable to fill even 50% of their intake capacity. Over 17% of the 140-odd engineering colleges in the state have not been able to fill 10% of their seats.

On Thursday, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) declared allocation of admissions for engineering courses in state colleges. Of the 55,422 seats available, more than 42% have remained vacant. ACPC officials said that of the 39,739 students who registered, just 35,222 took part in the admissions process and only 31,934 were allotted seats. ACPC officials said that of the 140 colleges in the state, only 31, that is 22.14% of colleges, had no seats left vacant. These are mainly government colleges or colleges that are the most sought-after.

Data regarding the current admissions in engineering courses in the state revealed that 69 of 140 colleges have less than 50% of their capacity filled. Officials said at least 35 colleges have less than 20% of their intake filled, while 7 colleges have not been able to find students exceeding 2% of their capacity.

For example, Shri Satsangi Saketdhan ‘Ram Ashram’ Group of Institutions, Vadasma, has just one student against its capacity of 360 students. Also, Merchant Institute of Technology, Piludara and Pandit Nathulalaji Vyas Technical Campus Wadhwan have got just two students each, against capacities of 240 each.

Though computer engineering is in high demand, at least 20% of seats in computer engineering have remained vacant across the state. Other streams like civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering have also failed to draw students to more than 45% of the available seats, making it clear that students are not ready to study at just any institution, whatever the course.

Against 55 seats, metallurgical engineering had only 12 seats vacant, while nanotechnology, though a modern course, had only 16 students opting for the 120 seats available.
