Tirupur: The city corporation has identified
188 hotels and house apartments which generate more than 100kg solid wastes and directed them to set up their own waste decomposition facility.
As per the solid waste management rules, 2016, the establishments which generate more than 100kg wastes should segregate and dispose the wastes on their own.
“So we have identified 188 hotels, kalyana mandapam and house apartments, which either could generate 100kg per day or are established on more than 500 sqft. We have direct them to set up decompose facility,” the city health officer, Dr Boopathy told TOI.
“There are many methods to dispose degradable wastes and these can be converted into manure by pouring innocalum liquid either manually or mechanically. We have explained these methods to these establishments,” said the CHO.
“So far, about 15 hotels and house apartments have shown interest to implement the system. We hope that all of them will establish their own compost yards within six months,” he said. Some of the hotels have raised the difficulties including lack of space for such facilities. The corporation has suggested them to set up the compost yard at the roof top using plastic containers, said an official.
A hotel owner told TOI, “Two or three hotels can join and plan to set up a compost yard or bio-gas plant. But it is in initial stages and it will be decided after discussions with the corporation.”
