Tech jobs are barely a blip on this map of the best-paying companies in each state

Amazon  , Alphabet  , Salesforce  and Facebook  may top LinkedIn’s list of the best companies to work for in the U.S., but when it comes to the jobs paying the most across the country, energy and health care are where it’s at.

How do we know this?

Public companies, under a new rule, are required by the Securities and Exchange Commission to reveal data about employee compensation. Cost-estimating website HowMuch.net crunched the numbers to create this map:

As you can see, the map is color-coded by industry and uses figures compiled and sorted by the labor group AFL-CIO to highlight the companies paying the best median wage in each state.

Here are the top 10 companies on the map:

State Company Ticker Median pay
New Jersey NRG Yield   $964,005
Nevada VirnetX Holding Corp.   $562,062
California Geron Corp.   $500,250
Massachusetts Infinity Pharma   $495,513
Virginia Arlington Asset Investment   $483,502
Michigan Esperion Therapeutics   $409,294
New York Intra-Cellular Therapies   $354,916
Maryland Chesapeake Lodging   $347,750
Texas Capstead Mortgage   $300,000
Utah Lipocine   $299,612

Those are some pretty stellar numbers for rank-and-file workers, but keep in mind, the opportunities are extremely rare. The companies listed above only employ 21 people each, on average, according to HowMuch.net.
