KOCHI: Danny was fresh out of engineering college and he did not have a single arrear in any of the subjects. Wanting to work in a Gulf country, he applied at a reputed oil and gas company there. However, his application was rejected stating that he was not qualified for the job as he wasn’t specialised in the field. Danny was baffled. He is just a fresher. While working hard to pass BTech in flying colours, no one said anything about specialising.
To help freshers out, ASTS Global Education, a centre headquartered in Kochi, is training engineering graduates to specialise in engineering design courses. The centre has over 20 courses that span six months, one month and two weeks. “The courses are available for mechanical, civil and chemical engineering graduates. The centre not only caters to freshers who want to specialise in certain areas,” ASTS Global Education’s managing director Shanil Muhammed told Express. “There are also short-term courses for those seeking a career updation or skill development. We also offer online courses.”
The centre offers hands-on training to the students. The centre is India’s only authorised training partner of Aveva, a piping software with a monopoly in the industry. It is also the only authorised training partner of Bentley, which is an offshore industry software, in India, Singapore and the Gulf.
ASTS Global Education is currently in talks with Fort Valley State University in Scotland to enter into a MoU to share their resources. If the talks are favourable, a MoU will be signed soon to organise activities and agree to certify the centre’s courses.
When the centre was established 10 years ago, there were no such training centres in the state. Currently, ASTS Global Education has branches in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi, and also in Dubai and Singapore. The centre says it has trained over 6,000 students since its inception in Kochi. Of these, 70 per cent of them has placed in different companies around the world.
