AGRA: The
Uttar Pradesh Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to
Aligarh Muslim University for “violating constitutional provisions” by not extending reservation to SC and ST aspirants in admissions and appointments.
The move comes a day after the National Commission for Scheduled Castes chairperson Ramshankar Katheria asked the university to clarify its stand on reservations or risk losing central funding.
The chairman of UP SC/ ST Commission Brijlal told TOI that notice has been issued to the
AMU registrar and he has been asked to reply by August 8. He said if AMU does not reply within the stipulated time, the commission will issue summons to them.
In its six-page notice, the commission expressed its displeasure over the University’s stand of not providing benefits of reservation to SC/ST students. The commission has asked why SC/ST communities have not been given benefits of reservation and under what circumstances this has been done.
