Fr. Peter Paul Saldanha will be the new Bishop of Mangaluru Diocese.

Pope Francis made the announcement on July 3. Mr. Saldanha would be the 14th Bishop of the diocese. The present Bishop of the diocese, Aloysius Paul D’Souza, who has resigned from the post, too made an official announcement at the Bishop’s House here on Tuesday, a release said.

Hailing from Kirem, near Kinnigoli, Fr. Peter Paul Saldanha was born on April 27, 1964. After initial studies in his native place, he joined St. Joseph’s Seminary Jeppu and studied Philosophy and Theology. He was ordained priest on May 6, 1991 for the Diocese of Mangalore.

Later, he served as assistant parish priest in Moodubelle, Milagres, Mangaluru and Vitla parishes.

In 1996, he was appointed professor at St. Joseph’s Seminary Jeppu, Mangaluru. Later, he went to Rome for higher studies in Theology and obtained Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology. Since 2010, he has been Professor of Dogmatic Theology at Pontifical Urbaniana University, Rome.
