Tesla P100DL Racer Handles Well, But Batteries Overheat Way Too Soon

You know how the Tesla Model S is already destroying just about everything on the road when it comes to accelerating from a standstill? It was only a matter of time before those talents were taken to the track.

Meet the EPCS V2.3 Tesla P100DL, built to take place in the very first Electric GT Championship that kicks off on August 12 at Silverstone.

Until then, there’s still work to be done on this car, something that ex racer and TV host Tiff Needell noticed during his time with it at the Circuit de Catalunya.

He also noticed the potential this car has, especially with its promised 778 HP (795 PS) and 734 lb-ft (995 Nm) of torque, which take it from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 2.1 seconds before it maxes out at 155 mph (250 km/h).

As part of its transformation into a racer, the car also comes with racing suspension, wider wheel arches, a stripped-out cabin, a race-spec aero kit, custom brakes, slick tires and a massive rear wing.

Unfortunately, the P100DL’s batteries overheated after just a lap and a half and Needell had to take it back into the pits as it was beginning to lose power. As for how it drives, the former Fifth Gear host said it felt solid and that the steering weight and brakes were good, despite the brief stint, but isn’t so sure if the series is going to be successful.

Well, they surely need to fix that overheating problem, which they say are aware of. So, they have a little over a month before the first race that’ll take place in cooler Britain instead of the searingly hot Barcelona track, but still, a solution needs to be implemented – and fast, because the clock is ticking.
