Glenmark Pharmaceuticals bags award for plastic waste management

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals Ltd, Goa facility has been awarded the “best corporate across industries” by the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) for environmental practices to prevent plastic
pollution.

A state-wide competition was organised by the GSPCB on World Environment Day for industry to determine initiatives towards plastic waste management.

Glenmark Pharmaceuticals undertook various measures to prevent plastic pollution which included reducing the use of plastic with the effective use of cloth booties in place of plastic booties, use of cloth bags to transfer linen, use of plastic crate to transfer glass bottles in place of polybag and elimination of fresh polybag to dispense the plastic bottles.

These measures resulted in reducing the use of plastic bags by 50 per cent at the Goa facility. In addition to making changes to the processes at the plant, a plastic waste collection drive was also initiated where employees collected 60 kg of plastic waste from the area surrounding the manufacturing facility and 172 kg of plastic waste from the roadsides.

Speaking on the award, Pareen Dashottar, vice president and Goa site head, said, “We continue to explore and adopt opportunities to make our processes more resource efficient and environment friendly at the plant.”

He further said, “This award is a testament of the commitment of the Goa facility and employees towards environment management which is reflected through enhanced processes.”
