KOLKATA: The
Bengal forest department has introduced
mobile alert to protect people from
elephant attack.
The forest department's initiative comes after
CM Mamata Banerjee asked it to do something to protect people from elephant attack.
Now every morning, the department sends messages with information of elephants' movement to the police, panchayat and administrative staffs who in turn circulate the information in their own way to local people. As a result, even as elephants move freely, people get alerted.
This initiative has started in Bankura and West Midnapore. A villager form Bankura said, "We are getting the information from panchayat and understand where the elephants are. We circulate the news in our village. All the villagers get alerted and avoid that route." Police, panchayat and local people, all are happy with this initiative.
Forest department official from Bankura Budhhadeb Mondal said, "This initiative works. Elephant attack can be avoided if the people remain alert."
