The
Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a PIL seeking a probe by a special investigation team (SIT) into the
Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam involving diamantaire
Nirav Modi and said the petitioner had made “unwarranted, uncalled for and reckless” assertions by attributing the role of the Prime Minister and the finance ministry in the swindle.
Stalling petitioner M L Sharma’s last ditch attempt to save the PIL by undertaking to delete the offending assertions, a bench of Chief Justice
Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said, “These are not PILs at all. PILs were meant to improve the lot of the deprived and downtrodden and not to tarnish someone’s reputation without any basis.”
