Vehicles diverted, leading to some congestion

A road overbridge on Grant Road was closed to traffic for a few hours on Wednesday after cracks were noticed on its surface.

The damage was reported at 11.10 p.m. on Tuesday and repairs were carried out the next day.

Joint inspection

With Tuesday’s bridge collapse at Andheri station fresh in public memory, authorities were taking no chances. The arterial bridge was cordoned off and a joint inspection was conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Western Railway (WR). Ravinder Bhakar, Chief Public Relations Officer, WR, said the bridge was reopened at 2.32 p.m., after it was declared safe for road traffic.

“It was a surface-level crack and did not affect the structure,” said a BMC official.

The civic body carried out minor repairs and resurfaced the cracked parts of the bridge.

Vehicles diverted

Frere Bridge is one of the main bridges in south Mumbai and is used by thousands of people and vehicles daily. It is named after Henry Bartle Frere, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency in the 19th century.

Vehicles were redirected to Kennedy Bridge during the repairs, leading to congestion in the morning peak hours.
