CHANDIGARH: After the showers on Tuesday, streets in many parts of the city were waterlogged. In Sectors 15, 21, and 34, besides the Industrial Area, road gullies blocked with garbage were responsible.

Visitors to Sector 34 were unable to park their vehicles. Federation of Sector Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (Foswac) president Baljinder Singh Bittu said: “Tuesday’s rain exposes the city’s hollow claims of monsoon preparedness. The civic authorities failed to clean the road gullies in time and kept claiming that the arrangements were proper.”

Confronted, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh said the work of cleaning the road gullies was on since May 15 and the number of cleaners had been increased based on the requirement in different sectors. Officials said they had identified a few spots where uneven roads and choked gullies had created flooding. The survey report says the parking lot surface in front of the Sector-17 bus stand was higher than the level of the road gullies. In the Sector-11 market as well, the roads are much higher than these drainage inlets, due to which flooding was big problem in the areas.
