Police Inspector Abhay Kurundkar, who was arrested in connection with the alleged killing of a woman police officer, has been dismissed from service, an official said today.
Interestingly, Kurundkar's name was recently figured on the list of officers awaiting promotion as ACP.
However, the state police played down the incident saying it was just a preliminary list.
Kurundkar, who was posted in Thane Rural Police, has been dismissed from the police force, a senior police official at the state DGP office said.
He was arrested by the Navi Mumbai Police in connection with the alleged kidnapping and killing of Assistant Police Inspector Ashwini Bidre-Gore (37).
According to police, Bidre-Gore and Kurundkar, both married, were allegedly in a relationship and he had promised to marry her.
However, the relations between the duo soured after Kurundkar allegedly didn't keep his word.
Investigators believe that Kurundkar killed Bidre-Gore on April 11, 2016 with the help of three others at his house in Mukund Plaza in Bhayandar near Mumbai.
The crime branch of Navi Mumbai Police had arrested Mahesh Palnikar, Kundan Bhandari and Rajesh Patil for their alleged involvement in the crime with Kurundkar.
One of the accused had allegedly told police that the body of the woman police officer was chopped into pieces and the severed body parts were kept in a refrigerator before they were thrown into the Bhayandar creek.
The body was never traced.
