Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the Supreme Court’s order on Wednesday curtailing the powers of the Lieutenant-Governor was a “big victory” for Delhi and for democracy.

In a tweet soon after the Constitution Bench gave its judgment in the case between the Delhi government and Centre, Mr. Kejriwal said: “A big victory for the people of Delhi...a big victory for democracy...(sic).”

Mr. Kejriwal added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government had “impinged on the powers of the State government.”

“If Modi govt had not withdrawn the powers of elected govt thro illegal orders, precious three years wud have been saved. People of Delhi are grateful to judiciary. Today’s order reinforces people’s faith in judiciary (sic),” Mr. Kejrwial wrote in another tweet.

He added that he had called a Cabinet meeting and ordered government functionaries to work according to the Supreme Court’s judgment.

He said he had directed officials to expedite work on proposals that had been stalled.
