Tai Bamhane runs to 1,500m silver; Both secure Youth Olympics berths

Ajai Raj Singh won the boys javelin gold with a personal best of 76.13m while Maharashtra’s Tai Hiraman Bamhane took the girls’ 1,500m silver on the opening day of the Youth Olympic Games’ Asian area qualification athletics meet here on Wednesday.

The two also secured berths for the Youth Olympics to be held in Buenos Aires in October.

India also won two bronze medals through Vikas Yadav (boys javelin) and Aparna Roy (girls 100m hurdles), but both failed to get Youth Olympics spots.

Nisar Ahmad finished fourth in the boys 100m ‘B’ final with 11.20, and 12th overall, and missed the Buenos Aires bus. Asia was allotted eight berths in the boys’ 100m and with only one athlete allowed from each country, Nisar was ninth in the list.

Girls, 1500m: 1. Yuki Kanemitsu (Jpn) 4:24.21; 2. Tai Hiraman Bamhane (4:25.66). 100m hurdles: 1. Ting Wei Lin (Tpe) 13.63; 3. Aparna Roy (Ind) 13.98. Triple jump: 1. K. Roksana (Uzb) 13.21; 5. Sandra Babu (12.53). 5,000m walk: 1. Ricuo Xi (Chn) 23:44.39; DNF: Roji Patel.
