Some villagers of Markook have stopped work alleging that they were yet to get compensation for lands, bore wells, and tress.
The work was stalled till Tuesday evening asking mandal-level officials to address their problems by taking the issue to the notice of District Collector P. Venkataram Reddy.
Police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating villagers but in vain. For several hours the agitation continued.
“We have sold our land to the government for Kondapochamma Project and received compensation. However, we were yet to receive compensation for bore-wells and trees in our lands. Despite repeated appeals we failed to get the amount in the past six months and were forced to resort to dharna,” said Rayaka Swami, one of the villagers, who lost 3.2 acres of land out of the total five acres he used to own.
He said many of those who lost land belong to dalit community. They were promised of two jobs of maskuri (village assistant) but that promise was also not honoured. In the lands of five dalits huge quantity of mud was filled.
In the evening the mandal officials again came to the village and promised to address their problems stating that two maskuri posts would be given at the earliest.
