S.K. Acharya, chairman and managing director of NLCIL, has urged the doctors to understand patients and accept them with all their physical, psychological and emotional problems through empathetic listening before initiating treatment intervention.
Mr. Acharya was speaking on the occasion of the National Doctors Day celebrations at the NLCIL Hospital in Neyveli on Monday.
Although it was difficult to handle patients who lived in an era of information explosion, doctors should bring them into confidence through clarification of doubts and fears which surround their medical problems. This was possible only if doctors go back to the basics of clinical diagnosis while shunning overt reliance on electronic devices and gadgets, he said.
Mr. Acharya said that this was the best way to regain the lost trust and confidence which once ruled the doctor-patient relationship not long ago.
NLCIL honoured veteran doctors G. Jayaraj, .P. Dhanyakumari and K. Janardhan, who succeeded in creating a purpose driven eco-system that prepared the hospital for its future challenges.
R. Vikraman, director (Human Resources), exhorted doctors to adopt judicious prescription of medicines to avoid over medication which results in huge wastage of drugs with potential threat of bio-hazard.
