Expected to benefit farmers in raising kuruvai paddy

Several parts of Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Karur and Pudukottai districts received heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday.

Heavy rain lashed Samayapuram, which recorded the maximum in the region registering 171 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district also received heavy rain recording 73 mm during the same period. The rain, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, started around 8 p.m. on Monday and continued late into the night. Paddy and cotton crops were said to have been affected in a few villages around Kumbakonam.

However, the rains are largely seen as beneficial to the farming community as it would help the kuruvai paddy crop raised with groundwater in the region.
