Heavy rain poised to lash Goa

The Indian meteorological department has forecast heavy rain in several parts of the state and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places on Friday and Saturday advising people to stay indoors.

The forecast indicates the possibility of up to 200mm or more rain on Friday and Saturday.

Under the weather department’s classification, 15.6mm to 64.4mm of rain is considered ‘moderate’; 64.5mm to 115.5mm is ‘heavy’; 115.6mm to 204.4mm is ‘very heavy’ and more than 204.5mm is considered as ‘extreme’.

The IMD forecast carries the colour-coded weather warnings: Konkan and Goa have been indicated to remain in ‘red’ category on June 6 and June 7 while on June 8 the regions will be under ‘yellow’ category.

Red signifies a ‘warning (to take action)’, while colours orange, yellow and green signify ‘alert’, ‘watch’ and ‘no warning’, respectively.

The weather advisory issued for June 6 and 7 on Wednesday says, “Widespread moderate rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rain is ‘very likely’ to continue over Goa state. There could be extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places of North and South Goa district on 6th and 7th of July. Hence people are advised to abstain from outdoor activities as much as possible during the period of extremely heavy rain and also watch for weather updates from meteorological centre, Goa.”

The forecast further said that heavy rainfall is very likely at a few places over the region for next 24 hours.

The Met department has said that there will be a high sea waves in the range of 3.0-3.2 metres at 11.30 pm on June 5 along the coast of Goa from Vengurla to Vasco.

High tide coupled with heavy rains can lead to waterlogging in the city.
