Move to reduce electricity usage

Reliance Energy, which powers close to 88,000 street lights for Brihanamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in suburban Mumbai, will replace the existing High Pressure Sodium Vapour (HPSV) lamps to the energy-efficient LED lights.

Energy efficient

In the first phase, the distribution company plans to convert 19,800 street lamps to LED lights by July-end, and the rest by December. The energy-efficient lights will require only 28.47 million units of electricity, as against the current 47.45 million units.

A Reliance Energy spokesperson said, “[Replacing the HPSV lights] will help save close to 40% electricity … without compromising on illumination.”

Street lights are commissioned, decommissioned or altered at the instance of local civic authorities. Reliance Energy also provides 13,500 street lights in the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation limits, and in areas under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), and Sports Authority of India (SAI). While the BMC has sanctioned financial assistance for the project, other local authorities are yet to do so.

The initiative follows the February announcement by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis that street lights under all municipal corporations in the State will be replaced by LED lights under the Centre’s Street Light National Programme.
