ALLAHABAD: The denizens of the Sangam city finally got a sigh of relief from high humidity, prevailing for the past around 48 hours, when heavy downpour drenched the denizens for about an hour. However, the rainfall also threw life out of gear.

Although the met department at Bamrauli received fairly less amount of rainfall, which recorded just 6.2 millimeters of rainfall, the rest of the city received heavy rains. Because of the heavy downpour, commuters and school children had a tough time returning to their homes.

Main roads and bylanes of several localities of the city including Khuldabad, Nakaskhona, Station Road, Leader Road, George Town, Tagore Town, Kydgunj, Dariyabad, Meerapur, Johnstonganj, Muttigunj, Allahapur, LIC Colony, Sobatiyabagh, Govindpur, Salori, Chota Bagarah, low-laying areas of Mufordganj, Rajapur and Ashok Nagar etc were all waterlogged for several hours.

"This is perhaps the heaviest downpour that the city has received in this monsoon season as the road leading to our colony became inaccessible for hours together, " said Kundan, a resident of Sulem Sarai.

The road, going underneath the Niranjan railway bridge, was also waterlogged thereby creating problems for the movement of both vehicles and commuters. Likewise, roads, especially those which have been recently repaired, were damaged leading to pits and bricks showing on the surface.

“Now the rains are here to stay as the city, and the northern plain would receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in the days to come with interval of dry days and when the humidity will increase, the city will have similar rains”, said Prof S S Ojha of the department of Geography, Allahabad University.
