Given India’s low investment in research and development, it will have to be reliant on foreign countries for AI machines. Further, importing AI equipment from abroad will be an expensive step which in turn will affect farmers or SMEs in their bid to enhance their efficiency. Thus growth and development of the country are linked to indigenous development of AI taking place. The government needs to focus on increasing expenditure on R&D in the AI sector and strengthen institutions to meet the challenges in becoming more advanced (OpEd page, “The dream of being an AI powerhouse”, July 2).
