SRINAGAR: A day after three pilgrims were killed and five others were injured due to landslides and inclement weather, authorities on Wednesday suspended the Amarnath Yatra via both Baltal and Pahalgam routes.

Three yatris were killed and five injured due to landslides along the Baltal route at Sonmarg in Ganderbal district on Tuesday evening, officials said. The condition of one of the injured is stated to be critical, they said, adding he was shifted to Srinagar hospital.

The deceased were identified as Delhi residents Jyoti Sharma (35), Shailendra Singh (30) and Ashok Mahto (54) from Bihar, Ganderbal SSP Fayaz Ahmad Lone said.

On Wednesday, two pilgrims died due to cardiac arrest, taking the toll during this year’s Amarnath Yatra to 11, the officials said.

Former CM and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Wednesday tweeted: “Tragic news of the deaths of Amarnath pilgrims due to a landslide. Condolences to the families of the deceased & best wishes for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
